Your privacy matters greatly to us at Modal. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and how we protect your information when you use our app.
Information We Collect:
- User IDs and Device IDs: We generate and securely store anonymous user identifiers, device IDs, and push notification tokens to allow you to access your habits, goals, and preferences across multiple devices seamlessly and to deliver the notifications you set up.
- Profile Information: We store the display name you choose and the profile photo you optionally add, so friends you challenge can recognize you. The name is whatever you type; we never require or verify a real name.
- Fitness and Habit Data: We collect and store the information you input into Modal, including habits, daily logs, goals, achievements, and challenge interactions with friends, such as reactions and photos you send in challenge conversations. This helps you track your progress, provides analytics for your personal use, and enhances your experience through personalized features.
- Purchase Information: If you subscribe or purchase premium features within Modal, we store transaction-related information securely to manage your subscription status and provide you with the appropriate premium features.
- Usage Analytics: We collect a small number of in-app usage events (for example, which onboarding steps were completed) tied to your anonymous identifiers, to understand and improve Modal. These events never include message content, contacts, email addresses, or the names of custom actions you create.
- Email Address (optional): If you choose to opt in, we store your email address to send you your weekly progress recap and occasional Modal product news. Providing an email is never required to use Modal, it is not used as a login or account identifier, and we never share or sell it. You can unsubscribe or remove your address at any time from your profile, and every email we send includes an unsubscribe link.
Information We Do Not Collect:
- We never require your real name, and we do not collect your phone number or physical address. An email address is stored only if you explicitly opt in to email updates, as described above.
- Within the Modal app, we do not use cookies, tracking pixels, or other similar technologies.
- We do not track you across other applications or websites.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or anyone else for their own use. The only third parties that touch your data are the service providers listed below, acting on our behalf.
Website Analytics:
Our website uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It is cookieless, collects no personally identifiable information, and does not track you across sites; visit data is anonymized and aggregated.
How We Use Your Information:
- To enable essential functionality, including habit tracking, reminders, and syncing data across your devices.
- To personalize your experience and provide insights and recommendations based on your interactions with the app.
- To analyze overall usage patterns and performance metrics to continually improve Modal's features and user experience.
Service Providers:
A few companies process data on our behalf, strictly to operate Modal: Vercel hosts our servers and stores uploaded photos, Neon hosts our database, Apple delivers push notifications (which carry the text of what they announce) and processes subscription payments, and Resend delivers the emails you opt in to. Each receives only what its role requires and may not use your data for anything else.
Data Security:
We implement industry-standard security measures, including encryption and secure servers, to protect your data from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
Data Retention and Deletion:
Your data is retained only for as long as necessary to provide you with Modal's services or as required by applicable laws. You may request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us at privacy@modalapp.io.
Children's Privacy:
Modal is not intended for individuals under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from minors under this age. If we become aware of any data collected from children under 13, we will promptly delete it.
Updates to This Privacy Policy:
We may periodically update this Privacy Policy. When significant changes are made, we will notify you through app updates, in-app messages, or via email if applicable.
